States Rebellion Pending

March 31, 2009

13-star_flagBrooksville, FL - Our Colonial ancestors petitioned and pleaded with King George III to get his boot off their necks. He ignored their pleas, and in 1776, they rightfully declared unilateral independence and went to war. Today it’s the same story except Congress is the one usurping the rights of the people and the states, making King George’s actions look mild in comparison. Read the rest of this entry »

Federal Marxism: The Freedom of Charity

March 30, 2009

communist_usa-flagBrooksville, FL - The National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy just finished a two-day lobbying spree on Capitol Hill, waging another small battle in the growing war over the dwindling charity dollars available to America’s nonprofits.

At stake is the freedom of donors to choose who is on the receiving end of their generosity. A highly-publicized paper released this month by the NCRP detailed criteria for the “best” form of philanthropy, which amounts to the NCRP determining which groups of people are best suited to receive money or services from an organization. False Solutions and Real Problems

March 29, 2009

2009-03-04t231922z_01_den07_rtridsp_0_financial-mortgagesBrooksville, FL - Someone once said that Senator Hubert Humphrey, liberal icon of an earlier generation, had more solutions than there were problems.

Senator Humphrey was not unique in that respect. In fact, our present economic crisis has developed out of politicians providing solutions to problems that did not exist– and, as a result, producing a problem whose existence is all too real and all too painful. Read the rest of this entry »

Arizona in the Cross Hairs

March 28, 2009

71be5ea5-dc8f-402f-91b5-3a009c53343bPhoenix, AZ – X-Caliber, a gun store in a nondescript neighborhood in this city’s northern section, has become embroiled in Mexico’s turmoil. The chaos there is the result of the Mexican government’s decision to wage war against rampant drug cartels that are fighting mostly against each other but also against the portions of Mexican law enforcement they have not corrupted. Operating in that nation’s north, they are serving this nation’s appetite for illegal narcotics and illegal immigrants. Read the rest of this entry »

The Great Betrayal

March 27, 2009

Brooksville, FL - On this sixth anniversary of America’s invasion of Iraq, there is finally a consensus among supporters and opponents that we’ve won the war. The surge that Bush launched and Democrats opposed has been successful and, as a result, Iraq has become a Middle Eastern democracy, an anti-terrorist regime, and an American ally. It would be hard to imagine a more remarkable turnabout or a more comprehensive repudiation of conventional political wisdom. Read the rest of this entry »

What If: President McCain’s First 50 Days

March 26, 2009

2009-03-09t202639z_01_was98_rtridsp_0_usa-mccainBrooksville, FL - Suppose Sen. John McCain, rather than Sen. Barry Obama, won the presidency but made the same decisions and pursued the same goals to turn around the economy.

The following is a hypothetical front-page story:

After more than 50 days in office, the new President, even to some of his supporters, seems overwhelmed by the magnitude of the problems he faces. Though he calls the economy job one, he confounds critics and supporters alike with the most audacious, ideologically driven agenda since the Great Depression, if not in the history of the republic. Prosperity Lost

March 24, 2009

6cd3323e-eb9f-45ff-9648-b191a59b73efBrooksville, FL - Ask the average person which is the correct answer to the following question: Which president gave the biggest tax cuts for the rich — Reagan or Bush? I would bet the rent money that you would not get the correct response, which is: Presidents have no taxing authority. Article I, Section 8 of the U.S. Constitution says: “The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes, duties, imposts and excises.” I know that many politicians and news media people read my column. How do we characterize them if they continue to speak of presidents cutting or raising taxes? Read the rest of this entry »

The Gunman and the Gun Ban

March 23, 2009

84410583-413a-402c-b093-5ce875ac294fnewsaporgBrooksville, FL - Less than a day after Michael McLendon fired his last shot, gun control groups issued press releases that cited his murderous rampage through three Alabama towns as an argument for reviving the federal “assault weapon” ban. The Obama administration also wants to bring back the ban, on the theory that outlawing the firearms supposedly favored by gangbangers and homicidal maniacs will reduce the casualties they inflict. But there is little reason to believe such laws can deliver on that promise. Read the rest of this entry »

Brooksville, FL - House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, at a June breakfast for reporters sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor, took a bold position on whether government should resume regulating political speech on the radio.

“Do you personally support revival of the Fairness Doctrine,” asked John Gizzi, political editor for Human Events.

“Yes,” said Pelosi. Read the rest of this entry »

The Hell With Our Constitution

March 21, 2009

Brooksville, FL - Dr. Robert Higgs, senior fellow at the Oakland-based Independent Institute, penned an article in The Christian Science Monitor (2/9/2009) that suggests the most intelligent recommendation that I’ve read to fix our current economic mess. The title of his article gives his recommendation away: “Instead of stimulus, do nothing — seriously.” Read the rest of this entry »
